Optune and Lee!
The end of December Lee started Optune - a device that we hope will help slow the spread of Glioblastoma. Optune works by using TTFields (tumor treating fields) to disrupt the mitosis of cancer cells. Although the device is a bit cumbersome, he is getting use to it! You may read more about Optune HERE.
Lee has to start with a clean shaven head. I then wipe it down with witch hazel. The placement of his “arrays” are based on his last MRI. I was given pictures that show me where to place the arrays. There are 4 arrays - 2 black and 2 white. The placement of the arrays took about an hour at the beginning and I am down to 15 minutes now!
After the arrays are placed, I tape the wires so that they go down the back of his head. I then lightly twist them to make a cord and the cord is place in a protective sleeve.
We plug the ends of the arrays into a junction box that plugs into his battery pack unit. It weighs about 3-4 pounds and he carries it with him 24/7. We call it “baby” because we joked that it was helping him prepare for being a grandpa...taking baby wherever you go. I bought him a moisture wicking skull cap to use instead of the white mesh stuff Optune sent. It’s much more comfortable and stylish!
He usually routes the cord down the back of his sweatshirt and carries the unit in either a backpack or side sling. He is able to go about his usually activities!
...even hold our new grandbaby, Lachlan!
